Virtual Christmas poetry with The Wordsworth trust

We started our festive season at Hames Hall Residential Home in Cumbria with our residents reflecting on their childhood Christmas memories.

Vilma ‘enjoyed getting dressed up’ ‘playing silly games and having a jolly good laugh’

Elsie has fond memories of her father hanging his ‘grey woolly socks’ up on the mantelpiece.

Elizabeth was excited to open her parcels and remembers always attending church with her family.

Hannah (staff) advised that making sure her family and her dogs are happy is most important.

Lilian kindly comprised this poem from everyone’s fond memories.

Mince pies for Santa

Carrots for the reindeer

Dad’s grey wool army socks

Hung above the mantelpiece

Apples and oranges snuggled inside

Early breakfast – off to church

Singing carols reminding us

Of why we celebrate Christmas

Time with family

Great fun – good times

Joy of seeing everybody.

Two maiden aunts staying over,

Presents, laughter, silly games.

Making memories that are

Still with us today.

Christmas Hamper at Hames Hall Residential Home in Cumbria

Each member of staff purchased an item for our Christmas hamper which was displayed in the conservatory and could be viewed by visitors in the visiting booth. Tickets were £1 per strip and all proceeds to the resident’s fund.

The winning ticket was drawn on Monday 21st December by our resident Marian.  The lucky winner was Mrs Sue Marshall.  Well done Sue!

Christmas at Hames Hall in Cumbria

Advent Calendar

Hannah’s advent calendar proved a delight for all.  Each morning from the 1st of December until Christmas Eve each resident opened on their day.  This activity was full of smiles and laughter.

Christmas Carols

We missed our festive tradition of welcoming the local school children into the home this year to sing, this is something everyone looks forward to at Christmas time.

Therefore we had an afternoon of singing our favourite carols enjoyed with mince pies and mulled wine.

Memories with Shirley

We enjoyed an afternoon of merriment with Shirley.  Shirley and residents reminisced about ‘Christmas time’.  Lots of Christmas singing was heard.

Christmas Party at Hames Hall Residential Home in Cumbria

We also missed our traditional Christmas party for family and friends, which is always held in the evening.  Instead of this residents and staff enjoyed their party day on Tuesday 22nd December.

Staff were dressed in their individual Christmas outfits, we enjoyed games, one of the favourite was ‘ pass the Christmas parcel – a huge parcel with lots of layers,.  Each layer containing a Christmas treat.  The winner ‘ Marguerite’ received ‘A chocolate orange’ to her delight!

After the games we enjoyed a ‘sing a long’ with John S and his keyboard, then followed by a buffet tea.

Christmas Day

A blanket of frost greeted us on Christmas day.  Our residents enjoyed visits and face time from their family and friends.  A gorgeous turkey dinner was enjoyed by all.
